Toshiba Licenses ARM Core for Mobile Products; New License Will Enable ARM Jazelle Technology for Mobile Applications

TOKYO, and CAMBRIDGE, England, Jan. 30 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Toshiba Corporation and ARM [(LSE: ARM); (Nasdaq: ARMHY - news)], the industry's leading provider of 16/32-bit embedded RISC microprocessor technology, today announced that Toshiba has licensed the ARM926EJ-S(TM) core processor. This license will enable Toshiba to offer an ideal processor for wireless applications such as mobile phones and personal digital assistants (PDAs).

Toshiba became an ARM® licensee in 1999 with the ARM7TDMI® core and the ARM946E-S(TM) core, which it has used to reinforce its embedded microprocessor business. The newly licensed ARM926EJ-S core is optimized for mobile products that support Java(TM) technology environments.

The ARM926EJ-S core contains ARM Jazelle(TM) technology that accelerates Java execution by up to eight times compared to a fully software-based JVM. It can also run diverse platform operating systems, such as Linux, Palm OS, Windows CE and Symbian OS, in mobile phone or other applications. The ARM926EJ-S core is fully synthesizable, enabling it to be applied to several generations of process technology. It also features selectable size instruction and data caches, and instruction and data tightly coupled memory interfaces. To further ease development of a complex system-on-chip (SoC), an Embedded Trace Macrocell (ETM) interface and an AMBA® AHB (Advanced High-Performance Bus) on-chip interconnect interface are also provided.

"Mobile products are evolving to embrace such functions as image transmission, that requires de facto standard Java technology-based middleware. This license will allow us to easily offer a Java technology- based SoC solution to our customers," said Shigeru Komatsu, general manager of the Telecom and Network Division at Toshiba's Semiconductor Company. "Our licensing of the industry-leading ARM926EJ-S core will enable us to expand our SoC solution business with IP-rich advanced embedded technologies."

"By licensing the ARM926EJ-S core, Toshiba, a major global semiconductor supplier, is able to design and supply to their customers core-based SoCs with excellent Java technology and integer performance to meet the needs of future generations of exacting applications," said Takio Ishikawa, president of ARM K.K. "By adding the powerful and flexible ARM926EJ-S core to its existing ARM licenses for the ARM7TDMI core and the ARM946E-S core, Toshiba is significantly broadening the choices they are able to provide their customers."
